Cirrhosis can be &#8220;compensated,&#8221; where the liver still functions reasonably well, or &#8220;decompensated,&#8221; where complications such as fluid retention or confusion appear. The goals of care are to treat the underlying cause, watch closely for complications, and reduce the risk of further progression.<\/p>\n<h2>Common signs and symptoms<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Persistent fatigue, easy bruising or bleeding<\/li>\n<li>Swelling of the legs or abdomen (fluid retention)<\/li>\n<li>Jaundice, itching, or confusion in more advanced disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What to expect at A Bit of Life Clinic<\/h2>\n<p>We establish the underlying cause and severity of cirrhosis through blood tests, imaging and, where needed, endoscopy to check for complications. Ongoing care includes regular monitoring, six-monthly liver cancer surveillance, management of any complications, and treatment of the underlying cause where possible.
