The key to prevention is finding and removing polyps before they have a chance to turn into cancer &mdash; which is exactly what a screening colonoscopy is designed to do. Bowel cancer is one of the most preventable and, when caught early, most treatable cancers.<\/p>\n<h2>Common signs and symptoms<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Often no symptoms at all in the early, most treatable stage &mdash; which is why screening matters<\/li>\n<li>A persistent change in bowel habit<\/li>\n<li>Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool<\/li>\n<li>Unexplained weight loss, fatigue or anaemia<\/li>\n<li>Abdominal pain or a change in stool calibre<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Who should be screened<\/h2>\n<p>Routine screening is generally recommended from age 45&ndash;50 for those at average risk, repeated roughly every 10 years if no abnormalities are found. Screening should start earlier, and more frequently, if you have a first-degree relative with bowel cancer, an inherited condition such as Lynch syndrome or familial adenomatous polyposis, or a history of inflammatory bowel disease.<\/p>\n<h2>What to expect at A Bit of Life Clinic<\/h2>\n<p>We assess your personal and family risk factors to determine the right screening schedule for you, and arrange colonoscopy &mdash; the gold-standard screening test &mdash; with any polyps found removed and analysed during the same procedure.
