Overview
Cirrhosis is the result of long-term liver damage — from causes such as viral hepatitis, MASLD or alcohol — where healthy liver tissue is gradually replaced by scar tissue. Cirrhosis can be “compensated,” where the liver still functions reasonably well, or “decompensated,” where complications such as fluid retention or confusion appear. The goals of care are to treat the underlying cause, watch closely for complications, and reduce the risk of further progression.
Common signs and symptoms
- Persistent fatigue, easy bruising or bleeding
- Swelling of the legs or abdomen (fluid retention)
- Jaundice, itching, or confusion in more advanced disease
What to expect at A Bit of Life Clinic
We establish the underlying cause and severity of cirrhosis through blood tests, imaging and, where needed, endoscopy to check for complications. Ongoing care includes regular monitoring, six-monthly liver cancer surveillance, management of any complications, and treatment of the underlying cause where possible. For advanced disease, we coordinate onward referral, including transplant assessment where appropriate.
