Overview

Therapeutic endoscopy uses the same scopes as diagnostic endoscopy, but with specialised instruments passed through the working channel to treat problems directly — often avoiding the need for open or laparoscopic surgery. This includes removing polyps (polypectomy), removing larger or flatter growths (endoscopic mucosal resection, EMR), stretching narrowed areas of the gut (dilation), stopping active bleeding, and placing stents to relieve blockages of the bile duct or bowel.

Common procedures

• Polypectomy / EMR — removing polyps or early, superficial growths found during colonoscopy or gastroscopy
• Endoscopic dilation — gently stretching a narrowed oesophagus caused by reflux scarring or other conditions
• Haemostasis — stopping active gastrointestinal bleeding using clips, injection or thermal therapy
• ERCP and stenting — clearing bile duct stones or relieving blockages of the bile duct or pancreas

What to expect at A Bit of Life Clinic

Because these procedures build on a standard endoscopy or colonoscopy, preparation is similar — fasting beforehand and sedation on the day. What differs is the plan afterwards: depending on what’s treated, you may need a short period of monitoring, dietary advice, or a follow-up procedure to confirm healing. Every therapeutic step, and why it’s being recommended over surgery, is explained clearly before the day of the procedure.
