Overview
The thyroid gland regulates metabolism, energy, temperature control and heart rate. When it produces too much hormone (hyperthyroidism) or too little (hypothyroidism), it can affect almost every system in the body. Thyroid nodules and goitre (a swollen thyroid) are also common and usually need assessment to check they aren’t affecting hormone levels or, rarely, are cancerous.
Common signs and symptoms
- Fatigue, weight change, or feeling unusually cold or hot
- A racing heart, tremor or anxiety (overactive thyroid)
- Dry skin, hair thinning or low mood (underactive thyroid)
- A visible or felt swelling in the neck
What to expect at A Bit of Life Clinic
We start with thyroid function blood tests and, where relevant, antibody testing or an ultrasound of the neck. Based on the results, we build a treatment plan — medication to correct hormone levels, monitoring for nodules, or referral where further investigation is needed — and explain what the results mean for your ongoing care and any regular monitoring required.
