Overview

Viral hepatitis refers to liver inflammation caused by one of several distinct viruses. Hepatitis A and E are typically spread through contaminated food or water and usually cause a short, self-limited illness. Hepatitis B, C and D are usually spread through blood or body fluids and can become chronic infections, which over years can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer if untreated. Each type is managed differently, which is why accurate testing matters.

• Fatigue, nausea and loss of appetite
• Jaundice and dark urine
• Chronic infections (B, C, D) are often silent for years, with no obvious symptoms
